February 11 – Women and Girls in Science Day: A Future Empowered by Equality

Every year, February 11th is celebrated worldwide as Women and Girls in Science Day to strengthen the role of women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and to highlight the importance of equal opportunity.

It draws attention to the need for greater visibility of women and girls in the scientific world, ensuring equal opportunities, and increasing female representation in scientific fields. Progress in science is strengthened by diversity; therefore, encouraging girls to pursue scientific education is of paramount importance.

The barriers women face in accessing science and technology fields can arise at different stages, from educational opportunities to career advancement. Institutions and education systems have a significant responsibility in this regard.

Key responsibilities of institutions include: implementing equal pay policies, ensuring access to career development opportunities, supporting mentoring and leadership programs, and creating an inclusive work culture; these are fundamental steps towards a sustainable transformation.

An ecosystem that unlocks the potential of women and inspires young girls shapes not only today's but also tomorrow's success.

The visibility of strong female role models in science is a significant motivator for young girls to pursue STEM fields. Girls who are introduced to and supported in science from a young age can become the researchers, engineers, and leaders of the future. An equitable ecosystem shapes not only today's professionals but also the potential of tomorrow. February 11th, International Day of Women and Girls in Science, serves as a reminder that equal opportunities empower not only individuals but also institutions, sectors, and societies.
